Jiří Černický is a leading Czech painter and experimental artist whose practice moves beyond classical painting into objects, installations, performance and conceptual approaches. His work is rooted in the creation of fictional scenarios, developed into final exhibition projects by linking different media—painting with objects, video or photography—often marked by strong emotions, ironic humour and social critique. He studied art education and Russian in Ústí nad Labem, continued at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague under Adéla Matasová, and graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (Miloš Šejn, Jiří David); from 2010 to 2023 he served as senior lecturer leading the Studio of Painting (Studio of Creative Art II) at AAAD Prague and was appointed professor in 2021. A recipient of major awards (including the Soros Award, the Jindřich Chalupecký Award, and the main prize of Graphic of the Year 2020), his works are held in collections such as the National Gallery in Prague and the Prague City Gallery, as well as institutions abroad; his limited-edition prints also connect to his long-term “didactic drawings” exploring romantic non-utopian visions and the ethos of archaic invention.
